Stop the Cycle with These Tips
Are you tired of being broke? Trust me, I’ve been there.
A dime.
I had a single, lonely dime in my paint-stained hand as I walked through the noise and chaos of the local Junior High cafeteria. I was a part-time art teacher, barely supporting myself and an alcoholic spendthrift mate. What would I get for lunch? I could indulge in either milk or soup. Not both! I chose the soup.
It is decades later, and I still remember how I hungered for a real lunch that day. Soon after that, fortunately, the alcoholic spendthrift took to the door. I looked around me and wondered, how did other people afford things like new clothes? Cars? How was it possible that people could go out to eat so frequently? I was so tired of being broke.
A year went by. I collected jobs like a squirrel collects nuts, continually struggling with feelings of lack and poverty. There was never enough.
Did you ever feel that way? Are you always working and yet not seeing any verifiable progress? Do you feel like you will never “get ahead”?
There is a way out!
Jane Roberts and the Seth Material
When I was at one of my lowest points, I searched for answers and stumbled upon Jane Roberts’s book, The Nature of Personal Reality. If you’ve never heard of Jane Roberts, she was an American author and medium.
Roberts published a series of books called The Seth Material. Who was Seth? Roberts believed that she got her ideas from someone named Seth, who she channeled. She never called herself the author of her books but addressed herself as the medium for Seth’s ideas. The Seth Material had a profound impact on the New Age Movement and has positively influenced many lives, including my own.
Perhaps this seems too “out there” for you, and you’re wondering if I am nuts. Believe it or not, I am one of many spiritual leaders who got early inspiration from Seth. Spiritual leaders, including Deepak Chopra and Marianne Williamson, all acknowledge the impact that Seth, the channeled author, had upon their early teachings in the field.
Challenge Your Beliefs About Being Broke
One of the many things I learned from Seth was looking at my belief systems surrounding money and wealth and how they were reflected in my life.
I “caught” myself believing what I heard my father say, over and over again: “All rich people were crooks.” My pre-adolescent mind absorbed that as TRUTH and twisted it around to produce the poverty I experienced. I believed I was too honest to be rich. Silly, isn’t it?
Another comment my father made frequently was, “I’d rather be poor and happy than rich and unhappy.” Well, I was poor AND unhappy! By recognizing that these self-defeating beliefs were directly related to my financial plight and challenging their validity, I took the first steps towards my financial success.
Do you have any beliefs that hold you back from a life of abundance? Do you think about wealth in a negative way? Perhaps you have a mindset that you don’t even realize you have. A common belief many people have is, “I’ll always be broke.” This is a statement many have heard their parents say over and over again. It’s passed down generationally, almost becoming a fact ingrained in one’s mind.
It will take some time and deep soul searching, but it is worth facing your beliefs head on. Examine your beliefs. Ask yourself, are they really true? Where did they come from?
Once I discarded my false beliefs, I was ready for action. What next?
The Law of Attraction
Part two is a simple trick. I played this fun mind game, and the results were overwhelming. I began to give myself the feeling of abundance. While shopping, I would say to myself, “I can afford this more expensive can of sardines.” I would buy the can that cost three or five cents more than the cheapest one.
Although I only shopped in second-hand stores, I would look at expensive, elegant outfits in shop windows and tell myself, “I can afford that if I truly wanted it.” Yes, that suit would have wiped out my entire savings, but knowing that I could buy it if I really wanted it gave me the feeling of abundance. I knew that depleting my savings would have put me in a downward spiral, so I saved my extravagant buys for the sardines. It worked. Years later, I found my dream job, and those expensive clothes filled my closet.
I know that I planted the seed for that wonderful job when I bought my first can of “expensive” sardines.
Try it! First, address any subtle beliefs that will prevent you from wealth, and then play the game of abundance. I’m not saying go out and put a ton of expensive clothes on credit cards. Perhaps opt for an organic apple instead of a regular apple if you can afford a little extra. It’s not about excessive spending; it’s about feeling the sense of abundance.
Some of you may recognize this practice as the law of attraction. Whatever you want to call it, it is not a secret, and it is not new. Jesus said, “Anything you pray for and ask, believe that you have received it, and it will be done for you.” (Mark 11:24) It is about what you believe and the power of your mind. The universe is responding!
