Prayers and the Heart Self

Did you ever pray for something, and it just appeared in front of you like magic? Did you then pray for something else, and it never materialized?

Do you wonder what the difference was? Why would God listen once and then not again? I have also puzzled through these questions. I have tried countless ways to discover how I could get my prayers answered.

Read on to learn what I discovered and how you can incorporate this knowledge into your life.

Daily Prayers and My Childhood Dog

When I was a little girl, I desperately wanted a dog. My father was adamant that we couldn’t have any pets. He claimed that with five girls to take care of, he had no interest in taking care of a dog too. Nonetheless, my desire for a puppy grew and grew.

One spring morning, when I was in 6th grade at a local Catholic school, I slid into the pew for the Friday Mass and landed on a small piece of paper. There, written in a childish scrawl, was a short, one-sentence Novena prayer.

For those who aren’t religious, Novenas are an ancient tradition. A novena consists of nine days of avid prayer or meditation, asking God for a special request.

I don’t remember the specific prayer, but the line beneath it is etched in my memory. It read, “If you say this prayer every day for nine days, you will get whatever you pray for.”

“Bingo,” I thought. This was my opportunity to finally get the dog I had been yearning for.

Multiple times a day, I said that prayer. I said it when I was bored in class, riding the bus, and waiting in the lunch line for whatever mystery meal was being served that day. My mind was convinced that I would have my dog.

The next weekend, while waiting for my turn to jump rope in the driveway, I looked down, and there was a dog! A beautiful, friendly puppy was sitting at my feet and staring up at me.

Out of all the children who were playing outside on our block that day, the dog chose me. I was amazed. I quickly counted my Novena days, and sure enough, it was the 9th day.

For years, I wondered how this happened. At first, I thought for sure that it was God. God answers Novenas all the time, doesn’t He?

Why Do So Many Prayers Go Unanswered?

The reality is so many prayers also go unanswered. No matter how hard we pray, we don’t always get those “perfect” jobs, and our loved ones don’t always heal. What made my prayer different this time?

I began to get a glimpse of the answer when years later, I read one of Jane Roberts’ books, The Nature of Personal Reality. Roberts’ book explains that we create our reality through the lens of our beliefs.

This is not a new idea as Christ was quite clear when he said,  “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” Mark 11:24 NLT

Looking back, I realize that as an 11-year-old girl, I believed in my heart that God left that paper on the pew for me. I was confident that if I said the prayer, which I did diligently, I would have my dog.

I believed all of this, and my thoughts during those nine days were only of that. If I said my prayer, I would get my dog. I was so convinced that I rejoiced in having this little puppy even before my beloved dog appeared.

Buddha taught: “With our thoughts we make the world.”  My thoughts expressed my beliefs, and the puppy appeared.

Does this seem impossible to you?  How do we create our world through our thoughts and beliefs?  Simply put, we are not merely human, we are both human and Divine.

The Heart Self

The Heart Self has been known by many names over time. Traditional religion calls it the soul. The Heart Self is the part of us “made in the image” of God, the Source of all life and love.

Your Heart Self is your being that is directly connected to this Source or the Divine. The Divine dwells both within, and as you, it incorporates and transcends your physical being. It is with this part of us, our Spirits, that we co-create with the Divine.

We are part of the matrix of creation, and in that regard, there are many things we cannot change, but fortunately, there are many that we can.

How Can I Enlist the Power of the Heart Self for my benefit?  For the benefit of the world?

Practice listening to your thoughts. What do they reveal about your beliefs? Do these beliefs serve you or hold you back from your desires?

So often, we say things to ourselves, “I’m stupid,” “I’ll never get that job,” or, ” All politicians lie.” Ask yourself, is this what I want in my world? If these are your beliefs, and they do not serve you, work on changing them, gently.

Change “I’m stupid” to “I made a mistake, but I’m smart enough to know it, so I will do better next time.” Change “I’ll never get that job” to “I have a lot to offer.”

How do you accomplish this? Practice imagining for a few minutes a day that you have received a job and experience how good it feels to have a job that gives you great joy, satisfaction, and abundance. It may not be that first job, but a better one.

Change “All politicians lie” to “Many politicians want to do the right thing for this country,” and spend some time imagining how good it feels to have those people serving our country.
